Grotesques – Harry

by on Mar.03, 2011, under Bronzes, Grotesques, Harry

Harry – The Duke’s third son.  His chances of ever inheriting his father’s estate are extremely remote, thereby keeping him from ever achieving any social stature.  So, he took the route most easily traveled for a man of “means without stature”. He became the Town Drunk. Toiling day in and day out on his “pub crawls”, he is a happy man in his pursuits, at least until the end of the day when his father’s servants come collect him from a roadside puddle.  If he had an ounce of ambition he could – oh, forget it. It’s never going to happen.

Grotesques – Gurt

by on Mar.03, 2011, under Bronzes, Grotesques, Gurt

Gurt – Sophia’s daughter and the wife of the Duke. Her half-Germanic heritage has caused her to be a staunch, opinionated and grumpy woman. On the surface, she has a terrible distain for her “Italian” position. Deep down she is terrified of the possibilities of losing everything that she has. She coddles and suplicates to the Duke to keep her station secure, easily swaying her man to her own way of thinking. Behind his back, though, she is a tyrant to servants and the household staff.

Grotesques – Francesca

by on Feb.28, 2011, under Bronzes, Francesca, Grotesques

Francesca – The so-called “wash” woman of the Duke’s household. She also sees to it that the kitchen staff is running smoothly, the supplies are in order and her “man”, Bill, isn’t off napping away an afternoon drunk. Anyone caught shirking their duties has met with her large, wooden spoon. The memories of it still haunt them to this day.

Grotesques – Agnes

by on Feb.28, 2011, under Agnes, Bronzes, Grotesques

Agnes – Sometimes referred to as “The Nanny”,  Agnes is the true head of the household. She maintains order and efficiency now that the Duke’s children are grown.  What once was a babysitting job has evolved into Chief Director. Her mind is lightening fast and her temper – lethal. Her main fault is her vanity. Her youth long since buried, she makes every attempt to hold herself together in the secret hopes that some fine, upstanding (and malleable) gentleman will sweep her away to some far away castle and cater to her every whim.

Grotesques – The Duke

by on Feb.12, 2011, under Bronzes, Grotesques, The Duke

The Duke

The Duke – Not entirely Italian in heritage, The Duke is really an English-Roman descendant. This makes ruling the local estate quite a challenge (Italians being the proud people that they are and resenting a foreign ruling class). Not exactly an overly intelligent person, he attempts to justify his occasional lunacy with a force of anger. Those in his employ will try to humor him when he is giving orders. The locals mostly just roll their eyes in disdain of his latest quests and projects.

Patinated bronze; Dimensions approximately 16 1/2″ x 13″ x 16″ (This is a variation on the patina that is available for the Grotesque series. Other patinas are available upon request. This one happens to be my favorite.)

Grotesques – Leonard

"Leonard"

Based on a design by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonard

Dimensions: 10″ x 7 1/2″ x 8″

Leonard – A local worker whose  allegiance is to anyone with money to give.  Nearly nomadic,  he is the past incarnation of today’s “day laborer”. He would sooner disappear in to the woods and live off the land before becoming one of The Duke’s indentured servants.

Grotesques – William

The Grotesques

William The Groundskeeper (Bronze)

William, or “Bill” as he is known casually,  is the key player in running The Duke’s Estate’s grounds.  On a more prosperous Estate, he would be in charge of the hiring and firing of laborers doing the constructing and clearing.  Since The Duke’s Estate is so far removed from the burgeoning cities and has little in the way of riches, Bill does it all.  Clear this, stack that, Bill is not much more than a day laborer under the employ of The Duke.

Grotesques – Sophia

by on Dec.24, 2010, under Bronzes, Grotesques, Sophia

Grotesque - Sophia by Rob Burman (Bronze)

When Sophia was a young beauty, she was married off to a rich land Baron in Germany. Never loving it, she spoke endlessly of her life in Italy. After giving birth to a daughter she was unable to conceive again. The Baron was disgusted and sent her and the daughter back to Italy. From then on, Sophia spoke, again endlessly, of her “wondrous” life in Germany and how distasteful her life in Italy now was. Long suffering, her social standing was saved when her daughter, Gurt, married the local Duke.
